Malawi Botanical Upholstery Fabric
Malawi is a decorative statement upholstery fabric — 73% polyester blended with 27% viscose, woven as a Dessin with a large 42 × 34.5 cm botanical motif. The pattern is not a printed surface treatment but a jacquard-woven structure: the botanicals are part of the cloth itself, with the viscose passes catching light gently across the foliage. Use Malawi where a single piece of furniture (or a cushion arrangement, or a feature wall of headboard) is meant to carry the design weight of the room. 640 g/m² on 140 cm is a substantial cloth — it feels like a serious textile. 50,000 Martindale rubs (Class SC), pilling 4-5, light fastness 6. 7 colours.
Description
Malawi sits on the decorative side of Kobe’s range — alongside Basoo (animal print) and Ceramic (large neutral floral) — as a statement upholstery fabric for accent rather than primary use. The 42 × 34.5 cm botanical motif is large: it is not a textural micro-weave, it is a designed visual element that will be visible across a cushion suite, a fabric-clad headboard, a single feature chair. The viscose-polyester blend (27% / 73%) gives the surface a quiet lustre — the viscose catches light along the botanical lines, the polyester provides the structural backbone and the abrasion resistance.
Where Malawi differs from Ceramic is that it is built for genuine upholstery use, not decorative-only: 50,000 Martindale rubs at Class SC is severe-contract territory, 640 g/m² is a substantial cloth, pilling 4-5 and rub fastness 4-5 hold up to real-world use. Light fastness 6 is excellent. So Malawi can sit on a single feature armchair that gets sat in every day, not just on a decorative panel. 7 colours edited as a coherent palette of grounds and accent tones.
