Chia Recycled-Olefin Upholstery Fabric
Chia is a sustainability-led upholstery fabric — 93% recycled olefin with 7% polyester binding the structure. Olefin (polypropylene) is naturally UV-stable, stain-resistant and quick to release moisture, which makes Chia practical in ways that go well beyond its eco-positioning. The Uni weave reads earthy and tactile: visible yarn texture, no shine, no print. 490 g/m² on a 140 cm bolt is a mid-weight cloth, comfortably above light residential and ready for general contract use. 40,000 Martindale rubs (Class SC), pilling 4-5 and rub fastness 4-5; light fastness 7 sits at the top of the scale, ideal for sunlit rooms. 12 colours, restrained natural-tone palette.
Description
Chia is a useful fabric to know because of what olefin (polypropylene) brings to a sofa cloth that other fibres cannot. Olefin is hydrophobic — it does not absorb water, so spills sit on the surface and wipe off; it does not feed mould or mildew; and it does not break down in sunlight, which is why Chia carries a light fastness of 7 (the top of the standard scale). At 93% the olefin content is high enough for those properties to define the fabric. The 7% polyester carrier locks the yarn structure and keeps the weave dimensionally stable.
The Uni weave is unfussy and tactile — a natural earthy look, no print, no pattern. 490 g/m² on a 140 cm bolt makes it a comfortable mid-weight to upholster across sofas, lounge chairs and benches. 40,000 Martindale rubs (Class SC) and rub fastness 4-5 cover severe domestic and general contract use; pilling 4-5 keeps the surface looking new through years of daily use. Shrinkage 1% is well within tolerance. Chia is not flame-retardant — for FR contract specifications, look at Cassia FR or Axium FR instead.
