How to choose the right carpet

A good carpet does three things at once: it groups the furniture into a single zone, dampens room noise, and makes the floor more comfortable underfoot. Narrowing the choice gets easier when you start with three questions — which room, which style, and which material.

Classic rugs bring oriental medallions and ornaments to traditional living rooms. Vintage pieces with a faded look add character to lofts and eclectic spaces. For graphic-leaning homes there are geometric and abstract patterns, and for restrained schemes — monochrome rugs with a single dominant tone.

Materials: wool, viscose, acrylic, polyester

Wool rugs are durable, retain warmth and clean up well — the best choice for the living room. Viscose has a silky lustre and works in bedrooms or studies with moderate use. Acrylic and polyester are the practical pick for hallways and children rooms: stain-resistant, machine-washable in many cases, and easier on the budget than natural fibres.
